Aquastab – Natural Limestone Water Stabilizer
Aquastab is a locally mined natural limestone product from the Western Cape, also known as Calcite or Calcium Carbonate. It is a safe, effective, and environmentally friendly way to raise the pH and alkalinity of slightly acidic or soft water.
🌍 Why Use Aquastab?
Much of the groundwater and surface water in the Western Cape is mildly corrosive to metal pipes, cement tanks, and concrete infrastructure. This includes rainwater, which is naturally soft and low in minerals, making it corrosive over time.
Aquastab helps to neutralize acidity and reduce corrosion by slowly releasing calcium carbonate into the water—restoring balance and making the water more stable for storage and distribution.
🧪 How It Works
Water that is low in minerals (especially calcium and magnesium) will naturally dissolve minerals from anything it touches, including cement tanks, copper pipes, and galvanized fittings. When Aquastab (limestone) is added, it provides a source of calcium carbonate that slowly dissolves into the water—raising the pH and adding alkalinity.
⏳ Contact time is essential: The water must stay in contact with the Aquastab for long enough to allow proper mineral exchange.
🧱 Installation Methods
To maximize efficiency, Aquastab should be installed in one of the following ways:
✅ Infusion bags placed inside water storage tanks
✅ Media filter vessels installed on a recycling loop
This allows water to circulate continuously through the limestone, ensuring optimal contact time and stabilization.
📏 Application Guidelines
Use 25kg of Aquastab for every 500 litres of treated water storage capacity
Ensure continuous water movement if using in tanks
Replace or top up media regularly, depending on water flow and acidity levels
⚠️ Important Notes
Aquastab is best suited for water with low iron and manganese levels
Only use Aquastab for water with a pH of 6 or higher
For aggressive, acidic, or iron-rich waters, alternative stabilization methods are recommended:
First, treat iron with an iron removal filter
If iron levels are high or water is strongly acidic, dose with soda ash or caustic lye before filtration to improve performance
