UV SYSTEMS & THEIR TYPICAL O-RING / SLEEVE SIZES

(South African common stock, SDE-series + standard domestic UV)

SMALL DOMESTIC UV – 10W to 21W

Model Flow Rate Quartz Sleeve Ø O-Ring Size
10W (226 LPH) 0.23 m³/hr 22–23 mm Small O-ring
14W (453 LPH) 0.45 m³/hr 22–23 mm Small O-ring
15W SDE-015 (680 LPH) 0.68 m³/hr 22–23 mm Small O-ring
21W SDE-021 (1360 LPH) 1.3 m³/hr 23–28 mm Medium O-ring

MEDIUM UV – 29W to 65W

Model Flow Rate Quartz Sleeve Ø O-Ring Size
29W SDE-029 (1814 LPH) 1.8 m³/hr 28 mm Medium O-ring
40W SDE-040 (2721 LPH) 2.7 m³/hr 28–30 mm Medium-large
65W SDE-065 (3024 LPH) 3.0 m³/hr 30–32 mm Large O-ring

LARGE COMMERCIAL UV – 85W to 120W

These units normally use a big thick rubber O-ring for a 35 mm sleeve.

Model Flow Rate Quartz Sleeve Ø O-Ring Size
85W (5443 LPH) 5.4 m³/hr 30–35 mm Large O-ring
105W (7938 LPH) 7.9 m³/hr 30–35 mm Large O-ring
120W (10,200 LPH) 10.2 m³/hr 35 mm Extra-large

INDUSTRIAL UV – 2×155W / 3×155W / 4×155W

These big UV chambers use flanged ends and a thick industrial O-ring, not the small domestic type.

Model Flow Rate Total Watt Sleeve Type O-Ring
(2)×155W – 20 m³/hr (310W) 20,000 LPH 310W Large 4″ flange Industrial flange O-ring
(3)×155W – 30 m³/hr (465W) 30,000 LPH 465W Large 2″ / 4″ flange (depends on manufacturer) Industrial flange O-ring
(4)×155W – 50 m³/hr (620W) 50,000 LPH 620W Large 4″ flange Industrial flange O-ring

➡️ These units DO NOT use the small round domestic O-rings.
They use big flat industrial O-rings designed for high-pressure stainless chambers.

UV Unit Maintenance Tips: O-Rings, Leaks, and Pressure Management

Proper maintenance of your UV water sterilizer not only extends its lifespan but also ensures safe, leak-free operation. Below are key tips regarding O-rings, seal lubrication, and pressure management:

🟢 O-Ring & Seal Maintenance

  • Replace the O-ring each time you open the UV unit, especially during lamp or quartz sleeve replacement.

  • Although standard O-rings can last for years under normal conditions, they may become brittle over time.

  • Old or dry O-rings are prone to cracking or leaking, especially when reassembled.

⚠️ Avoid Over-Tightening

  • Over-tightening fittings can:

    • Deform or flatten the O-ring

    • Cause buckling at the seal point

    • Result in leaks even when everything appears tight

  • Tightening onto a dry seal increases friction and may cause:

    • Stretching, pinching, or tearing of the rubber

🧴 Lubrication Tip: Use Crisco, Not Vaseline

  • Apply a light layer of Crisco (vegetable grease) to lubricate the O-ring:

    • Prevents pinching or stretching during assembly

    • Ensures a smooth, uniform seal

    • Safe for aquatic environments (non-toxic to fish and pond life)

    • Does not degrade rubber like Vaseline or petroleum-based lubricants can
